She smiled faintly and nodded. “I suppose. You do need your rest. I shall send one of the maids up shortly with another dose of the pain draught. It will help you sleep.” Returning her nod, he rose. When she didn't rise as well, he nodded again and walked to the door. Once on the threshold, he paused, wanting to say something but uncertain what.

The day, which had begun so wretchedly, had turned into one of serenity and pleasure, and all because of her kindness. What could he possibly say to convey his gratitude? Unable to think of anything grand enough, he simply smiled and said, “ Thank you, Jane.”
